Reading Schedules

The DTA prints pocket size schedules for every bus route. We also have web based versions on our web site.

The front cover of each passenger schedule shows the route number, route name and key destinations along the route. Schedules are color-coded according to sections within the DTA service area.

• Purple schedules are routes serving the western area of Duluth.
• Blue schedules are routes serving east Duluth.
• Green schedules are routes serving Hillside neighborhoods, Canal Park and Park Point.
• Red schedules are routes serving Superior, WI.

Each passenger schedule includes a time table and route map. Schedules show departure / arrival times at major intersections along the route. This major intersections are called "time points". Time points are identified on the schedule by a circled number above each column. This number corresponds with "time points" displayed on the route map. In addition to these time points, route maps show the streets the bus travels on and the symbols marking key destinations.

To Use A Schedule

1. Select the correct schedule. If you don't know which hand schedule to use, check the map on the schedule to locate your neighborhood and the route that travels where you want to go.
2. Select the day of week. Open the schedule to either the weekday, Saturday, or Sunday section.
3. Are you going "to downtown" or "from downtown"? Determine the direction in which you need to travel, and check the map for the segment of the route on which you will be riding. DTA time tables read "From Downtown" or "To Downtown", as neighborhood buses travel through downtown Duluth en route to their destination. Connections to other buses can be made in the downtown area.
4. Select the closest time point. Identify the closest time point to your starting point by locating it on the route map. This time point number corresponds to the time point number on the timetable column heading.
5. Determine your departure time. Read down the column to the schedule time closest to your desired departure time. If your starting point is not a time point listed on the schedule, use the time point the bus reaches just prior to your starting point and estimate your boarding time. By reading across on the same line to the time point closest to your destination, you can determine your estimated arrival time. Bus stops are located on the corner on every block or every other block along the route. Always be at the bus stop 5 minutes early.
6. Planning your trip. If you want to arrive at a specific time at a destination served by the route, simply locate the column showing that time point or location, read down to the desired arrival time, then staying on the same line, read back to the left until you reach the column of your starting point.
7. Routing number and destination route code. The first column on the schedule - "Routing Number" - indicates the routing the bus is traveling on. The last column on the right - "Destination Route Code"- indicates the route the bus will travel once it passes through downtown.
