Stride Guide

STRIDE is a dial-a-ride service for persons unable to use regular route DTA buses because of disability. {Please note: There are differences between STRIDE in Duluth & STRIDE in Superior; call for any clarifications.}

What is Stride?

STRIDE - {Special Transit RIDE} is a dial-a-ride curb to curb transportation service that is required by the American Disabilities Act or ADA. It is designed for people with disabilities who cannot access the regular route buses. It operates within 1/4 mile of the DTA routes in the City of Superior and within the City boundaries of Duluth and Proctor. Riders may also transfer or be asked to transfer between STRIDE and the DTA regular route where there is accessible service.

Who Can Ride STRIDE?

People whose disabilities prevent them from boarding, riding on, or deboarding regular route DTA buses may qualify for this service. A physicians statement is required. People with temporary disabilities are eligible while that condition exists.

HOW CAN YOU REGISTER FOR STRIDE? Its easy!

First, call STRIDE at 722-3327 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. STRIDE staff will ask you a few simple questions and then send you a certification package. Second, fill out the questionnaire and pass it on to your physician. They will complete the form and send it to STRIDE. STRIDE staff will review the information and contact you as to your eligibility.

How To Ride STRIDE

Once you are eligible you may call the STRIDE office (722-3327) weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to reserve trips. Trips may be scheduled up to 7 days in advance. STRIDE will allow a limited number of subscription trips. These are trips that are made on regular basis (like work) and are permanent in nature. Same day trips may be scheduled based on availability. You should be ready for your STRIDE trip 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Drivers will wait only 5 minutes for passengers that they cannot see.

CANCELLATIONS, TRIP CHANGES, & SERVICE REFUSALS

It's important to cancel trips as soon as possible. This allows the service to be used by others. Cancellations must be made at least three (3) hours before the scheduled pick-up time. Riders who miss three (3) scheduled trips without proper cancellation will lose their service for a minimum of thirty (30) days. The individual must then request to be reinstated to use the service.

Trip destinations may not be altered by the rider upon pickup. STRIDE does have the right to refuse rides to people who are unruly or acting inappropriately in the opinion of STRIDE.

STRIDE Fares

The fare for STRIDE is $1.20 during off-peak hours and $2.50 during peak hours. Peak hours are from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, all other times are off peak. Fares must be paid in exact change, For your convenience, books containing 10 one dollar and twenty cents tickets are also available from your STRIDE driver.

Compainion Riders

Up to three non-eligible riders may accompany STRIDE riders (space permitting). They pay the same fare as STRIDE riders. STRIDE riders must inform the scheduler at the time the trip is booked about companion riders. Companion riders who are critical to the trip may ride free.

STRIDE Drivers

STRIDE drivers are licensed professionals specially trained to provide the assistance needed for curb to curb services. Drivers will assist passengers onto the vehicle and assist with seat belts and wheelchair securement as needed. The service is curb-to -curb so drivers will only help passengers in and out of the vehicle, not in and out of buildings.

STRIDE VANS, BUSES & LIFT EQUIPMENT

The vehicles used by STRIDE are specially designed for people with mobility disabilities. They feature lowed floors with wheelchair ramps or wheelchair lifts where needed. These vehicles were designed to meet the requirements of ADA.

TTY COMMUNICATION

STRIDE is TTY equipped for those who require it. Call 722-SAVE. When the operator answers strike a key to alert the operator to connect you to the TTY

NOTICE: STRIDE BUSES AND VANS CAN NOT HOLD ALL TYPES OF WHEELCHAIRS. WHEN MAKING RESERVATIONS, ESPECIALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME, PLEASE INFORM THE STRIDE OFFICE AS TO THE TYPE OF WHEELCHAIR YOU HAVE.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE THREE-WHEELER CHAIRS MAY BE ASKED TO RIDE IN A CONVENTIONAL SEAT IF POSSIBLE.

STRIDE Safety

STRIDE riders are required to wear safety belts. Drivers will offer assistance with belts as needed. Restraint seats for children are not provided by STRIDE and are therefore the responsibility of the rider.

STRIDE & the DTA

The Duluth Transit Authority manages STRIDE. An independent contractor provides the scheduler and drivers. STRIDE offices are located at the DTA Operations Center; 2402 W. Michigan St.; Duluth, MN 55806. 722-4426
