Demolition Phase of DTA Multimodal Project to Begin on Monday

DULUTH, MINNESOTA (August 1, 2014) – Construction of the Duluth Transit Authority’s (DTA) new Multimodal Transportation Center is proceeding with the demolition of the Salter Building and the Wells Fargo parking ramp scheduled to begin on August 4, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The demolition phase is expected to last three-to-four weeks. Access to the skywalk area around the demolition site will be restricted until the buildings are completely demolished. The skywalk link that leads from the Northwest Passage at 3rd Avenue West to Wells Fargo Bank will be closed during the entire demolition phase as a safety precaution.
Pedestrians approaching the downtown area through the Northwest Passage from the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC) are advised that instead of turning right at Michigan Street towards the Wells Fargo Bank, they should follow the directional signage to the left towards the Harbor Center where they can continue in the skywalk system to downtown, or exit down the stairway to Michigan Street and 3rd Avenue West. When the demolition is complete, a temporary skywalk will be opened that will connect the Northwest Passage to the Wells Fargo Bank Building; it will be secure, fully accessible and well lit.
Further, during the demolition of the parking ramp walls that are immediately adjacent to the Northwest Passage, it will be necessary to temporarily close the Northwest Passage skywalk from the DECC to downtown, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. This closure is estimated to last three (3) days and will occur in mid-August. During this temporary closure, the DTA will provide shuttle service between the DECC parking lot and downtown. Signage will be posted throughout the skywalk and downtown area listing the closure dates, pick-up points and shuttle schedule.
Demolition will be completed with as little noise and dust as possible; machines will steadily shear the building into smaller pieces which will be loaded and hauled away. The contractor is experienced in dust management at these types of projects and will make every effort to keep it contained. Mortenson will limit demolition activities to the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. so that nearby residents will be afforded normal noise levels in the evening.
