Northwest Passage Scheduled to Temporarily Close on August 18th, 19th, and 20th.

Information meeting scheduled for Thursday, August 14th at the Greater Downtown Council.
The demolition phase of the Duluth Transit Authority’s (DTA) new Multimodal Transportation Center project is proceeding with a temporary closure of the Northwest Passage. This temporary closure is scheduled for Monday, August 18th through Wednesday, August 20th. Please note that this temporary closure will only occur between the hours of 6:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. each day. Pedestrians will have access to the Northwest Passage before and after these hours.
The DTA has schedule an informational meeting on Thursday, August 14th at 3:00 p.m. at the Greater Downtown Council (GDC) which is located at 5 West 1st Street. Officials from the DTA, LHB and Mortenson Construction will provide an update on the project. They will discuss skywalk closures, demolition work and other details related to the project. This meeting is open to the public and the media.
During this temporary closure, the DTA will provide FREE shuttle-bus service between the DECC parking lot and downtown. The main pick-up location for this shuttle-bus service is on West Railroad Street just below the Northwest Passage near the entry doors to the stairway that leads to the DECC parking lot. Citizens should look for the temporary DTA bus stop with a display showing the shuttle-bus schedule. “22 SHUTTLE BETWEEN DWNTWN & DECC” will be displayed on the bus’ destination sign.
The DTA Port Town Trolley is an additional option for citizens traveling between downtown, the DECC and Canal Park. Citizens who park in the DECC parking lot can also ride the Trolley for FREE by displaying their DECC parking lot permit. The closest Trolley stop to the DECC parking lot is located in front of the William Irvin ship. Flyers showing the schedule and map will be provided to the DECC, the GDC and the Holiday Inn & Suites for distribution to their patrons. Downloadable PDFs of the map and schedule on that flyer are available at www.duluthtransit.com.
As a safety precaution, the skywalk link that leads from the Northwest Passage at 3rd Avenue West to Wells Fargo Bank will be closed during the entire demolition phase. When the demolition is completed on September 2nd, a temporary skywalk will be opened that connects the Northwest Passage to the Wells Fargo Bank Building. In the meantime, way-finding signage will be displayed in the Skywalk and at the DTA Transit Center East. Citizens are encouraged to follow these signs to the temporary stairwell that is located on the lower corner of Michigan Street at 3rd Avenue West. Please look for the sign that reads, “Skywalk Access to DECC and Bayfront.”
