DTA ridership continues upward trend – Increased 20% since 2005
Duluth Transit Authority ridership for 2011 surpassed the 3 million rider mark for the fourth consecutive year since 2002. Ridership for 2011 was up 93,392 rides or nearly 3% over 2010 at 3,264,477 – the highest passenger count since 1993. DTA ridership has steadily improved over the past few years and is up 20% since 2005.
While transit use is up by all segments of the general population, U-Pass ridership has shown the most consistent gains. U-Pass ridership for 2011 at UMD, College of St. Scholastica, Lake Superior College and UWS increased by 9.5% over 2010 with 818,483 rides. U-Pass ridership at UMD for 2011 was 567,354 – an increase of 10% over 2010.
DTA Bike & Bus ridership for 2011 also surpassed the previous year’s total. In its 17th year of operation, the Bike & Bus service transported 27,231 bicycles – up 19.6% over last year. The DTA began providing the Bike & Bus service on a year-round basis in 2009.
The DTA raised fares on January 1, 2011 and revenues for 2011 were up 20.7%.
The DTA also added late night and holiday service in 2011, which accounted for an additional 20,000 operational miles. At the same time, DTA buses used 1,500 fewer gallons of fuel in 2011 due to the fuel efficiency of newer buses in the fleet.
