2014 MN State Bus Roadeo Comes to Duluth this Saturday
Published: Expires: 7/13/2014
DULUTH, MINNESOTA (July 10, 2014) – The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) is hosting the 27th Annual Minnesota State Bus Roadeo on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. This event is FREE and open to the public. The opening ceremony will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the large-bus division competition taking place from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The small-bus division competition will take place from 10:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The DTA first hosted the Minnesota State Bus Roadeo in 1989, but it has been 6 years since the event was held in Duluth. The event features 12 different obstacles that competitors will be scored on for both accuracy and timing. There are 35 bus operators coming from transit systems across the state to compete. The Grand Champion in both divisions will represent Minnesota at the Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA) and the American Public Transit Association (APTA) national bus roadeo competitions in 2015.
Heath Hickok, DTA Director of Marketing and 2014 MN State Bus Roadeo Chair, believes that the Roadeo presents a great opportunity for the public to see some friendly competition that promotes safe driving skills.
“Each transit system sends their best drivers to compete for the honor of representing their peers at the national competitions,” said Hickok. “The DTA is pleased to host this Minnesota tradition that emphasizes safety in public-transit service.” Hickok continued.
Presenting Sponsor, Jefferson Lines, has entered two of their own bus operators in the competition. Jefferson Lines is celebrating their 95th Anniversary at the event. The public is welcomed to attend the festivities and help celebrate this milestone with free cake from Johnson’s Bakery! The public in attendance will also receive a coupon from Jefferson Lines for a 25 percent discount on their next trip.
The Minnesota State Bus Roadeo is managed by the Minnesota Public Transit Association (MPTA) in concert with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). It is primarily funded through the Rural Transportation Assistance Program (RTAP). Support also comes from event sponsors.
